Barcelona is a wonderful place; there’s so much to do, so much to see and certainly so much to experience. This is why I have come up with a list of what a real tourist should do in Barcelona. This is to guide you to the musts and the main tourist attractions of the city so that you can leave knowing that you’ve seen it all in Barcelona.
1. La Sagrada Familia
Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece is without a doubt a must see when visiting Barcelona. Construction started in 1882 and was put on hold following the artist’s tragic death, after many years of starting and stopping, the temple is still in construction and has been for over a century. It’s truly breathtaking façade will have you open mouthed for hours and once you get to the top of the turrets, you’ll be amazed by the view of the city.
2. Las Ramblas
A visit to Barcelona wouldn’t be so without a visit to Las Ramblas. If you tell anyone that you’re going the city, they’ll tell you to go here. Although this is the most well known street in the city and is over crowded and well, quite frankly over priced, you really must go. This long road stretches from Plaza Cataluña to the port and is adorned with flower stalls, animal markets and street performers. Half way down you will find ‘La Boquería’ market which is a vibrant and bustling food market, selling traditional Spanish produce.
3. Casa Batlló
And again, another of Gaudí’s unmissable attractions. This house is situated on Passieg de Gràcia, right in the centre of the city. Both the exterior and interior of this building are spectacular and are no let down to Gaudí’s trade style. For me, the roof top terrace and the outer façade are the most spectacular part of this building. Be sure to go along and see for yourself, even if jut from the outside.
4. The Magic Fountains
The Magic Fountains can be found off Plaza España, at the bottom of Montjüic. A beautiful setting of a palace and a walkway down to two towers, the Magic Fountains come to life on the weekend when a spectacular show lights up the sky. On Friday and Saturday nights, the fountains ‘dance’ away to music and light, while the street is filled up with tourists in awe.
5. Parc Güel
Yes, another of Gaudí’s master creations. The park is situated at the very top end of Barcelona and gives a spectacular view of the entire city. Much more than your standard park, Gaudí’s architecture offers a wonderland of buildings, coves and landscapes that could have you occupied for an entire day.
Make sure to book your accommodation ahead of time as apartments (apartamentos Barcelona) and hotels (hoteles en Barcelona) get booked up quite quickly in the centre.
