Berlin is one of the most interesting cities in Germany. Not only is it the political heart of the country, but it also contributes much in fields such as history, culture, leisure and painting, amongst others. As a passionate lover of the arts, of colours, textures and different forms of painting, Berlin is the ideal place for a short break to quench your thirst for beautiful things. The multi-cultural quality of its inhabitants expresses itself via a multitude of street festivals and parades like, for example, the ‘Culture’ Carnival. It is the ideal place to capture an eternal image. With such a huge quantity of museums and exhibitions you will be inspired, discover the history of Germany, and be able look into contemporary artistic movements.

I’m not going to go into details, but a teacher of mine once said that the first rule of painting for a novice is at the moment of choosing a subject for your watercolour, there are no rules!! It isn’t much use, but it’s completely true. In short, this is the reason why the art of water-colouring is so complicated, but on the other hand this is what makes it creative. What happens inside the brain at such a moment? Many people, once they have tried watercolours, abandon other techniques…so that they can let their spirits fly!

So, getting back to Berlin, there are many centres for learning, and the best thing is that they are to be found right on the street!

That’s right, just imagine yourself before the Kurfürstendamm with your brush and easel….it really is a great experience and I recommend that you try it as soon as you can. In addition, Berlin is a reasonable city and you’ll quickly be able to find a cheap alloggio a Berlino (appartamenti a Berlino and Berlino hotel) to rent in your favourite part of town. In my opinion, Mitte and Charlottenburg are the most beautiful areas. However, you need to be very organised, the timings for the courses aren’t very flexible and often they are full to bursting….let yourself get carried away with multi-colour creativity, since Berliners are fed up of seeing their city represented by the colour grey.

For beginners, a good place to start is the Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen (the Berlin Artists’ Society), which is a fairly well reputed school of painting that works with professional models. This is another manner of expressing yourself.

For those who wish to perfect their knowledge, there are more extensive and specific courses, which are given at the Künste University of Berlin. This school covers all manner of artistic activities, such as painting, graphic arts, sculpture and contemporary art. I hope this has given you an urge to visit Berlin….see you soon!
